I wonder when men put pen to paper to sign their name to that declaration Did anyone feel just a little afraid of how to become a sovereign nation? When enslaved and enslavers were told of the widespread emancipation Could they have conceived of the uphill work with any kind of anticipation? As members of committees at home and those at the World Health Organization Heard of the rapidly spreading disease and determined the need for isolation Could they have foreseen the long-term ramifications before the world received a vaccination? Does anyone truly know that their decision may have a generational implication? If so, would they make that choice with humble hesitation? Why should we set aside a day of celebration For the beginning of a story, for which we do not know the ending, yet this tradition Is not without good reason. The roots of our current gratification Should give to us the necessary information For making the world a better place. Then the future will look back on us and say with fascination That we gave our heartiest dedication And lived out our lives with grace.
Thank you for taking the time to read my poetry. It means a lot to me. If you have thoughts or comments I would love to hear them.
May this week bring celebrations to your sense and your soul.
